Incursions usually begin with an Aboriginal tools and resources handling session. Children will learn about Aboriginal cultures, history, the environment, animals, plants, shelter, tools, weapons, and sustainability through a hands-on learning experience.
We also offer a number of activities that you can choose from to add to your Koori Kinnections school holiday incursion. The following examples are appropriate for all ages, and are delivered at age appropriate levels.
- Art Workshop - Run by an Aboriginal Artist! Children will discover how and why Aboriginal people traditionally used artwork, and materials that have traditionally been used. Children will produce their own work of art. Medium varies, e.g. stone art (using paint pens for finer detail) or canvas. There may be time for a collective art work too (calico or large canvas).
- BUSH CRAFT: Shelter - Children will learn about traditional shelters from across Australia including the people who used them, the materials, and how they were used. They will also create a small gunya each using traditional materials.
- Aboriginal astronomy - learn about the night sky in an engaging seasonal program that includes art, movement, 'hands on' with resources and a traditional game.
- Play traditional Aboriginal Games
- Nawi (canoe) building - using native plants, children will each construct a small canoe (hand-held size) that they can take home.
- Bush food cooking (e.g. damper and kangaroo meatballs OR Johnny cakes served with native fruit jam)
- Bush-remedy making workshop
- Learn an Aboriginal Dance (dependent on Dance Educator availability)
- Clay Creations - storytelling and creating with clay.
- Guided walk - take a guided Cultural walk at your local bush reserve, park or school ground.
- Storytelling
Ages 8+ only
- Weaving - children will learn how to weave using traditional methods. Options include creation of bracelets, bookmarks, necklaces and/or cord using raffia, feathers and beads. Children will also discover what resources are traditionally used to weave with, and what can be produced using these techniques.
