Koori Kinnection Cultural Workshops aim to assist teachers in embedding Aboriginal culture and perspectives in your classroom or Centre with respect and understanding. Where applicable workshops can also assist with RAP development and implementation.

Workshops are tailored to meet specific outcomes for your staff, and include guided walks, talk/presentation, hands-on experiences and opportunities for questions and discussion. We offer a number of Cultural activities that you can choose from to add to your programs.

By engaging teachers through an interactive topic based approach, Koori Kinnections workshops are a memorable learning experience for all.

Workshop content

Where practical, sessions begin a guided walk in nearby park, nature reserve, heritage site or school grounds/neighbourhood, where you'll learn to identify local native plants that have traditional uses, as well as related activities and knowledge you can share with your students.

Workshops also include '

a. 'hands-on' with Aboriginal tools and resources - sharing information about Aboriginal cultures, history, the environment, animals, plants, shelter, tools, weapons, and sustainability through a hands on learning experience;

b.  an activity that you can choose from the list below

c. Q and A session/yarning circle  to finish  "You can't ask that!".

Koori Kinnections Cultural workshop - optional activities and topics

Bushfood Cooking Workshop (requires 'teaching kitchen') - learn to cook with native ingredients.

Traditional story-telling  - stories that have passed down though generations! Includes suggestions for stories to share with your classes and ideas for extension activities.

Traditional Games  - The games taught have been played in Australia for thousands of years. We share how to play them with your students - you'll learn where the games are from, and why they were taught (e.g.hunting, listening, and hand-eye coordination skills).

Traditional and/or Contemporary Art - discover how and why Aboriginal used art, what was used to create art, ideas for artwork with your students and produce your own artwork/s to take home or exhibit in your classroom. (Art material cost may apply).

Traditional and/or Contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance - learn and/or create dances to share with your students; gain knowledge on how and why Aboriginal dances are traditionally performed and created.

Weaving -  learn how to weave using traditional methods. Create bracelets, bookmarks, necklaces, rope etc. using natural resources (might also include use of raffia, feathers and/or beads). Discover what resources are used to weave with and what can be produced using these techniques.

Dispossession and The Stolen Generations -This engaging talk gives insight into how post-colonial history effected Aboriginal peoples. As this is a very sensitive subject, we discuss it with the utmost care and respect at a non-political level. Through art and discussion we educate on Aboriginal perspectives of invasion, frontier wars, loss of land, reserves and missions and the stolen generations. The talk includes ideas for teacher to discuss the topic with their classes at an age appropriate level.

Shelter (sustainability) - learn about traditional shelters from across Australia including the people who used them, the materials, and how they were used. Get 'hands-on' and create a small gunya using traditional materials (a popular classroom activity!)
